Frequently asked questions
Will my child grow out of a squint?
A true squint does not go away on its own. It needs treatment early, because the turned eye can become lazy. An occasional wandering eye in the first few months of life can be normal — if it continues, have it checked.
When should a child have the first eye check-up?
Before starting school, and sooner if you notice a squint, the child sits close to the TV or squints to see, or there is a squint or glasses in the family.
How is a lazy eye treated?
With glasses where needed, and by patching the stronger eye for set hours each day so the weaker one learns to see. It works best the younger the child is.
Can glasses alone correct a squint?
Some can be. A squint caused by long-sightedness often straightens fully with the right glasses; others need surgery as well.
Is the eye taken out during squint surgery?
No. The eye stays in place — only the muscles on its surface are adjusted. It is usually day-care surgery, and leaves no scar on the skin.
