Frequently asked questions
Who treats ROP and children’s retinal conditions?
Dr. Ratnesh Ranjan — MBBS, MS, FVRS — who specialises in vitreo-retina and pediatric retina.
Which babies need ROP screening?
Babies born early or small — in India, those born before 34 weeks or weighing under 2,000 g — and others the neonatologist advises, such as babies who needed oxygen. The first screening is usually due by about 30 days after birth.
Is the screening painful for my baby?
Numbing drops are put in, and a small instrument keeps the eyelids open for a few minutes. Your baby may cry and be uncomfortable for a short while, but it does no harm.
Can ROP harm my baby’s sight if it is not treated?
Mild ROP often settles on its own as the retina grows, but severe ROP can pull the retina away and cause permanent loss of sight. That is why screening on time, and treatment when it is needed, matter so much.
Is follow-up needed after ROP treatment?
Yes — regular visits until the retina has fully matured, and eye check-ups through childhood, as premature babies are more likely to need glasses or have a squint later.
